In this research, the anti-inflammatory effect of Carrasquilla extract (Berberis halliii) was tested using the model of induction of plantar edema in rats (Rattuss novergicus) in the Biotherium of the Faculty of Sciences of the School of Biochemistry and Pharmacy of ESPOCH. We used 15 rats divided into 5 groups: positive control, negative control, A, B, and group C. As a control, the measurements of time 0 hours of all the rats were used. The inflammation was induced with 0.5% Carrageenan. The treatment consisted of administering orally to the positive control the anti-inflammatory Naproxen sodium 16 mg/kg, while to groups A, B and C Carrageenan extracts at concentrations of 114.47, 68.68 and 45.78 (mg/kg) respectively and the negative group received only distilled water. The volumes of inflammation were measured from 0 to 12 hours and the percentages of inflammation and inhibition were calculated every two hours, the results showed that the negative control maintained the inflammation. The positive control inhibited prostaglandins in a percentage of 56.39 at 12 hours. The concentrations of groups A, B and C inhibited prostaglandins in a lower percentage than the control group (49.16%, 35.08% and 18.83%). The anti-inflammatory effect obtained in increasing form is: A>B>C. It was concluded that the doses of the Carrasquilla extract presented an anti-inflammatory effect during the 12 hours of the test, from the twelfth hour onwards the edema progressively decreased. The investigation was extended with the study of acute toxicity by administering Carrasquilla extract at concentrations of 114.47 and 2000 mg/kg, observing the absence of mortality and morphological alterations, thus classifying the plant under study as non-toxic.es_ES
