Implementación del sistema de distribución de medicamentos en dosis unitarias en el Hospital Luis F. Martínez del cantón Cañar

Abstract

At the Luis F. Martínez Hospital in the canton and province of Cañar, a Unit Dose Medication Distribution System was implemented in the hospitalization area. It was developed during the month of December 2012-April 2013, during which time, the cost of medicines for each patient admitted to the hospitalization service was evaluated. The results show that the system succeeded in reducing prescription and dispensing errors. Furthermore, from an economic point of view, the savings achieved during the trial period allow us to propose its application in all the Hospital's services. The system consists of dispensing, distributing and storing medicines in 24-hour doses for each patient according to medical prescription. It required several stages that included: distribution of medications, preparation of pharmacotherapeutic profiles, daily return records and review of drug stock. It is necessary to increase the number of pharmacists in the institution in order to continue with the proposed System of Distribution of Medications in Unit Dose to provide greater safety to patients and avoid losses and waste of medication.
