The deterioration of the grinding plates of the mills used in mining, encouraged to develop a study to increase the wear resistance of these elements in order to lower the maintenance of the equipment. The aim of this research work is to increase the wear resistance of the grinding plates in the mining mills by means of thermal treatments of temper and tempering. Thus, important information about the materials and kinds of wear was collected. Later the material characterization was developed, through metallographic techniques, the same way the use of a spectrometer was necessary to find out the chemical composition of the steel. Hardness tests were made for establishing the mechanic steel properties in a supply state. The next step was some thermal treatments of temper and tempering in water and oil under the following conditions: austenization temperature 925C and tempering temperature 705C. Once all these treatments were developed, the next stage was to make wear testing at 12 samples: 4 in a supply state, 4 in water temper and tempering and 4 in oil temper and tempering. The microstructure of the samples shows particles located in different regions depending on the technical treatment. In order to verify the composition of these particles, an EDS analysis and micro indentation Vickers were done to establish the particles hardness at the matrix. Through the EDS analysis, the presence of carbon and manganese was determined. As a conclusion, the spectrometer determined that there is manganese steel at 0,7%C, 13,3%Mn, 0,2%Si and a hardness average of 14HRC as well as an austenitic microstructure. The samples tempered in water and oil increase the hardness at 24HRC and 21 HRC respectively. The microstructure presented an austenitic matrix with manganese carbides presence. Finally the temper and tempering samples in water showed a better wear resistance. As suggestion it must be necessary to make X ray diffraction tests to determine the specific chemical composition of the found carbides and an EDS mapping analysis to know each element distribution.es_ES
